Burns Matheson

I have a bit of info on him that was provided by Burns himself for the Torch River History book. He wrote, in part:   In 1931 I accepted a position with the Department of Natural Resources (provincial government) as a fire patrolman and was sent north to Torch River to take up my new job.

He went on to say:  As my job was only temporary, I filed on a homestead in September, 1931 so I would have some place to live during the winter months........  I was on fire patrol during summer months and worked on the roads in the wet seasons.

One of the highlights of my life was meeting Edith Anderson, a Torch river girl whom I married in 1933. We lived on the homestead until 1936 when I became Field Officer at Beaver House (west of Nipawin) In 1940 I returned to Torch River as Field Officer in charge of  (the) Torch River Provincial Forest. I built the Torch River Department of Natural Resources forestry station which was known as Grassy Lake in the early days. Gary Parker (Field Officer at Grassy Lake-1931-'40) retired in March of 1940 and I replaced him in these duties. (end quote) Words in brackets are mine, not Matheson's.

I know that the early Field Officers also manned the towers in their districts so he probably was on the towers at Beaver House and Grassy Lake during his years there. He transferred to Hudson Bay (Junction) in 1945 but I think that by that time there were regular tower men so I would think that he no longer did that as a part of his regular job. I believe that Walter Kratz became towerman at Grassy while Burns was there but nowhere in the piece that he wrote for the history book does Matheson mention manning a tower.

Walter Kraatz     Walter was the tower man for the Saskatchewan Department Of Natural Resources (now called Saskatchewan Environment and Resource Management or SERM) at the third Grassy Lake Fire Tower which, at that time, was located just three miles east of the present site of River Trail Country Vacations. He arrived in our area in the late 1930's and took up trapping in the northern forest. He became tower man at Grassy Lake Tower in the early 1940's and retained that position along with trapping in the winter until his retirement in 1965 at the age of 67.He sold his trapline in 1966 and spent his remaining years in Creston, British Columbia, getting married for the first time in his 70's.
About 1971 a new fire tower, also called Grassy Lake Tower, was erected about 5 miles north of that site and the old tower was decommissioned and eventually dismantled
