Journals April- June 2005:   Break-up !  (and a message for Heidi-Ho)

Hello...

Well you little rat-fink – one down and six to go... are you smiling ? And I didn't even have to set a trap or fire a shot !

I noticed a raven hanging out at the water hole. My first thought : go check for a dead fish.  Sometime later, while retrieving a pail of water I noted a fluff of fur floating in the water. After closer observation I see the "fluff" is a body !!  With a long slender willow I drag it toward shore and the collapsed dam and discover it’s the body of a wolf .

Now, with a rope I drag the carcass onto shore . There is only minor decomposition (some fur falling / rubbing off). The wolf is a a large juvenile female and appears in perfect condition health - wise.

I pull her away from shore and the water supply !  And then think, " LIKE WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED ? " After a few days of contemplation I note :

a) The female wolf died around the same time Heidi did.

b) There was no decomposition because of the extremely cold water.

c) So what would kill the two females ? (Oh of course-- A Yeti / Sasquatch ! )

Probabilities:

– I assumed there was a pack of four when Heidi was killed. I was wrong ... there was an alpha male / female traveling together and two juveniles traveling close by – but separately.

- Would a male alpha kill two females and why ? (doubtful)

- Would a female alpha kill the competition ? (possibly)

- Any wolf experts out there ? (if so, please e-mail me!)

At the time this wolf died, I noted wolf tracks around the water hole and assumed it was there for a drink of water. I recall seeing the wolf slipping/sliding on the freshly snow-covered new ice.

Later a relative would say, " you should start boiling your water !  My response: " Are you kidding?  I haven't felt better for years !! "

Prehistoric??? ( No... it's actually a pelvis turned upside down, with vertebrae attached.)

- once upon a time there were two world famous archeologists name Ed and Mike.  They were about to get rich by discovering a prehistoric fish ...  But alas ! It was not to be, 'cause they got the head and tail mixed up!!
